Leo offers to take me out for lunch, but he doesn’t know about the complete couch potato I strive to become on Sundays. Whipping out more bread, this time I look at him. “Care to make another wager?” I ask.
“It wouldn’t be fair. You have tomato soup, and we all know what goes with tomato soup.”
I shrug my shoulders. “But you’ve never had a grilled cheese sandwich like mine,” I counter.
“Sunshine, it’s fair to say I haven’t experienced anything like you and, just like your grilled cheese sandwich, I plan to take in everything that is Gwen Ambrose.”
After my onion-and-tomato-grilled-three-cheese concoction, we play a long game of Scrabble. I’m the queen of word play but I have to say, he holds his own. Chutzpah and flapjack won me the game, though I was very impressed with quixotic which I swore was not a real word, but it is … cocky bastard and his gloating.
When three rolls around, he stands and brings me close. “I’m not sure how to move forward with you and me.” He pauses when my eyes widen, and my hands reach for my trembling chin. The expression of fear must be written all over my face. “Oh, shit, Sunshine, that’s not what I meant. We’ll move forward, that’s sure as shit. I’m saying, I’m not sure what to do with the kids, for now.” He tips my head to his. “Hell, what did that fucker of an ex do to make you question your self-worth?”
Giving him a weak smile, I retort, “When you have five days of nothing to do, maybe I’ll tell you then.” I’m instantly feeling stupid that I doubted him after the weekend we’ve had.
“I can’t wait two weeks to be with you again like this, you in my arms but … telling the kids might be too soon.”
I nod in agreement. “We’ll play it by ear, okay? Nothing has to be decided tonight.” I pull away from him and walk to my counter where the notepads and pens are kept. I scribble down my next must-love item, then fold it over and on the top of the paper, I write #5.
“What happens when we get to the end with ten?” he asks, like he had a couple days ago.
Winking, I reply this time a little different. “I don’t know, maybe you’ll have to surprise me.”
“That I can absolutely do,” he adds, pulling me in for one last kiss. He releases me after giving me his signature kiss on the bridge of my nose. Closing the door behind him, I take in a deep breath. I can’t wait to learn more about him as he learns more about me.
A knock on the door brings me back to the here and now. I open it without checking, thinking he’s forgotten something. “What did you forget?”
Dwayne’s beady-ass eyes are staring back at me, as are my sweet daughter’s. I thought I’d have a reprieve from having to deal with him. I was told Marta would be dropping Luna off but, hell no, I get this asshole.
